In the early sixties, Ford was dominating the 500 mile NASCAR races, so they created a sub-series for their big performance car called the 500 XL. The 64 model year brought more sculptured styling that appeared busier (in an appealing way) than the straight-lined earlier models. Many consider the 1964 the most attractive Galaxie ever built.
