You will want to contact your local DMV (department of Motor Vehicles). They can tell you for sure as it depends on if you have any paperwork. Did you buy it from a towing/salvage company, did they give you any paperwork. Hopefully you have a bill of sale, otherwise you may need an inspection and/or more may be required.

your best bet is to send Vin number to state motor vehicle dept. and if old lic plate are on it send numbers and request a abandoned vehicle title they may ask for info as to how long it has abandoned and where some time local Court houses can also help if a last owner of record is found you may have to send a certified letterer to last known address as to your intent
