I have a CHEVROLET Impala sedan 4 doors, of 1961, engine of 6 cil., in line, 235 cubic inch, automatic transmition. The car smokes very very much quantity of oil, but only in their 5th cilinder; I need clean the 5th spark plug each 40 milles, and the oil consumption is arround a quarter galon of oil each 60 milles .......horrible! I need to quit the cilinder head, to view what is the problem. I think that the oil ring are broken. If the cilinder surface would be in good condition, I would change the rings of the 5th cilinder, the others no, because the compresion is 120 PSI on all, include the 5th. I would be grateful if we can say me the TORQUE OF THE BOLTS OF THE CILINDER HEAD, AND THEIR ORDER, and the TORQUE OF THE BOLT OF THE CONNECTING ROD. Thank you for your help. Greetings ADRIAN

Hello Adrian. The head bolt torq for your 235 is 90-95 ftlbs I start at 50 ftlbs then 70 ftlbs then to 90-95 ftlbs starting with right side center then middle center then in a clockwise outer spiral go over this paturn at least twice to make sure all are tight. Your rod cap bolts torq to 35-45 ftlbs. Yes it seems that the rings could be broken in that cylinder BUT be sure to check the modulator on the back of your transmission they can leak trans fluid and foul your plug you did not say what the compression was in # 5 cyl if compression up then you have a worn valve guide or that modulator leaking. Hope this helps OLDSCHOOL. need any more information( [email protected] )
