I am looking to buy a 1969 chevelle ss396, 325 hp 400 turbo 12 bolt. the car has been sitting since 1981. the car is very rusty but all there and no one has changed or modified the car. probably all # matching. The current owner has the original title, the protect o plate, but no build sheet or other documentation. How do we prove this car is a real ss option. It is green, so not one of the 2 colors that only came with ss trim. nothing about this vehicles identification says ss or z25, but the car has everything that it should have for an ss car. can someone help?? Look at the cowl tag, all Chevy SS models had 138 embossed on it.

There is nothing in the Vin number that differentiates an Super Sport from a V 8 malibu. The best way to verify the engine is correct for the car is the code stamped on the pad next to the water pump. It shows the approximate build date, where it was assembled, the horse power and transmission used. It will also have the Vin number. Of course numbers can be changed but chevrolet did a good job of stamping the Vin number on the frame and transmission.
