in my endless search for parts to restore my 1968 impala sport roof I have come acroos a 1968 belair wagon with a 3-speed OVERDRIVE transmission. It has a cable operated overdrive. I've never seen anything of the sort. Can anyone offer some information and/or history on this transmission or should it join the scrap pile in the crusher?

In the overdrive transmissions equipped Chevys of the 50's the rear ends were 4:11 ratios. I don't know if that still holds true with the later year Chevys. I think it would be a wise investment to keep the o/d tranny, all the wiring, relays, kick down switch and bracket, as well as the rear end for future use or resale. With gas always on the rise it might be to your advantage to look into the benefits of installing it in your ride for better fuel economy. I am seriously thinking of installing an o/d tranny in my 57 Bel Air for the same reason. At any rate don't scrap the transmission and it's components for they will be worth big money in years to come.
