Without equipment or properly functioning gauges, you are only going to be able to really tell when the car is under load while driving. If the manifold pressure does not drop below zero or is barely dropping below then chances are it's bypassing or not working properly. My 66 turbo is pretty noticeable in 3rd gear give it some gas and you'll feel it.
