how do you tell a real z28 from a regular camarofrom the vin or firewall plate?

You will need to check the engine codes and dates. VIN won't help you unless it states you have a 6 cylinder and then you know for sure you don't have a Z/28.

You want to check the trim tag on most Z/28 cars. The Vin is no help really.

If you can, you will want to check the original paperwork including the build sheet. Not only do you want to check just the trim tag, because these too can be modified and fraudulent, but check the engine codes, transmission codes, rear axle code, etc.

67-69 have partial V.I.N.that is stamped under the cowl vent on the firewall that should match the #'s on your tag!
701/2 on up to 81 are stamped on the firewall behind the heater-A/C box, 82 and newer are stamped on the right side metal on the dash just remove the dash pad !!
