Lets assume the motor numbers are ground off (don't know why, but they are, maybe resurfaced the block!) is there a way one can tell a 327 from a 283, by just appearances?

Look at the motor mounts. If it's original vehicle 283 the first ones had front motor mount. No drilled and tapped holes in the side of the block. All 327 blocks I have seen have drilled and tapped motor mounts on the side. Look at the front of the head and describe the raised humps, triangles or notches. As long as the heads have not been swapped out or replaced. Casting numbers can help identify the engine. Read up on casting numbers codes small block chevy.
