CAN I TELL FROM A 1970 CHEVELLE SS VIN NUMBER IF IT IS A TRUE SS?

the1 = chevy 36 =chevelle { all models } 37 = 2 dr hard top. that is as far as the vin goes to id the car,anything more would require a build sheet. they can be found in the seat springs or under floor mats and ometimes on top of gas tanks.these cars usually came with bucket seats check the inside seat track mounting to floor to see if added later,if in doubt.

I bought a 69 SS Chevelle from a gentleman that had had it since about 1984. When we went to transfer the title, we were asked at that point if it was an SS. It made a significant difference in taxes and transfer fees! It did not call out SS or not on the title.
