I am a little confused about what small block chevy engine applications use the 168, versus the 153 tooth flexplate ? Does it depend on the year or the "generation" of the block ? If so, does the crankshaft play a part as well, or will the crankshaft always have the proper flexplate bolt-up hole configuration for the "generation" of small block engine that it is intended for ? the 153 tooth uses the starter that has a long and short bolts that are in line with back of block.used on 230-250 262- 283- 305 -327 engines...the 168 tooth uses a stagared bolt pattern and is also used on some 6s as well as 8s it has more cranking power than the small flywheel... the 400 smalll blaock flywheel has a weight on it for balamce..in86-87 the crank was changed to have a 1 piece seal on the rear main and the bolt pattern was made smaller.
