The #1 thing I can tell you is that you are going to hit allot of dead-ends! DMV is good but I would start with people around your community. Talk to them, ask if people remember "the" car, do they remember who owned it, etc. etc. Unless the car is current in the DMV system they will not find it, and even if they do find it they most likely will not share the information with you!
