Originally they were a vacuum operated system, I think Eastwood Co makes a 12 or 6 volt system you can use to replace it.

True! A vac system runs the wipers; I have a 46 and that's the deal. Mac's (macsautoparts.com) has parts & conversion kit for '40 6 or 12 volt system. About $150.00 + S/H I have ordered from Mac's and had good response.
