383 66' chrysler newport running to rich... i think?
I am 17 and have just aquired this rare classic. The car runs great it just lets off way to much exhaust gas. Light black smoke is visible from tail pipe. The odor of gas is fairly strong. Is this normal or is it running to rich? i could really use the help of someone experienced.

Have a tune up done. Plugs, wires, cap, rotor. Then time it. You will probably have to have the carb either rebuilt or adjusted. It's also possible that the choke is sticking partially closed. Pull off the aircleaner and see if the choke butterfly is all the way open when the car is at operating temp. Good Luck! Mark

Tune up and choke operation are a good start. If you have exhaust gas testing in your area I would suggest taking the car and having the carb adjusted to the lowest emmissions out put poss and still keeping the throttle responce poss.
