1978 Camaro Z28 has 305 engine according to engine code suffix "CPY". Is it stock...?
At the bottom of the page at http://www.oldride.com/library/1978_chevrolet_camaro.html, it says "Note: There was also a 305 engine option with about 5,000 produced ". Does this mean that the engine might be stock? The VIN confirms that it is an actual Z28. It's an automatic transmission.

The fifth symbol in the VIN represents the engine should be a U for 305 V8.

The fifth digit is an "L"... for 350 cid. Oh well, I guess it's not original. Maybe I can find a "date code correct" engine to put in it to get as close to original as possible.... Thanks for the help.

I may be mistaken, but I don't think they ever made the z28 's in automatic that year, so the tranny is probably not original. But yes it very well could be stock.
