Why is my car surging at running speed?
I just installed a rebuilt carburetor. Starts and idles fine. Accelerates good. At driving speed (50 mph or so) it surges a lot (engine accelerates and drops back). Does this also in 2nd gear (maunual transmission). What could be causing this? I should note that when rebuilt was first installed, the float needed to be fixed (the car was idling rough, smoking, stalling). Ostensibly, this was fixed. Thanks.

2 posibilties FUEL FILTER COULD BEPLUGGING UPNOT ALLOWING ENOUGH FUEL FLOW,OR FLOAT LEVEL IN CARB SET TO LOW CAUSING ENGINE TOSTARV FOR FUEL. ALSO CHECK NEEDLE IN CARB FOR POSSIBLIE BLOCKAGE.

Is correct, the problem is definitely a float problem. Usually set to low, as the float bowl starves for fuel, because the engine is exhausting more fuel than the delivered, the vehicle slows down, as the float bowl fills, the engine speed is increased.
