The VIN number is on a plate located on the inside body piller/jamb, driver door side, look through the hinge shields. The best thing you can do is send away for the PHS docs, they will tell you everything about the car, what it originally came with, etc... Best money spent in my book.
The engines are also stamped with a vin number, look at the front of the engine, just below the passenger side head, you will see a engine code and also a series of numbers/letters. if the engine is original to the car it will match the cars vin number.
